Small History of Vaccines
For some of us, it feels as if vaccines have been around forever. Although, this isn’t the case. Did you know that we were able to create an immunity to smallpox with material from cowpox? In 1796, Edward Jenner was able to demonstrate that those injected with cowpox, a less deadly disease than smallpox, were able to develop an immunity to deadly smallpox? Over the next 200 years, the vaccine was perfected and spread, eradicating the disease worldwide in 1979.
During this time, other vaccines were able to make an impact, such as the rabies vaccine in 1885. Much of this research was conducted throughout the 1900s, especially during the mid-twentieth century. In today’s age, we have vaccines for things that many thought impossible. Smallpox was just the beginning. Now vaccines are available for:
- Yellow Fever
- And even the flu!
And while we sometimes have to get booster shots for these, they can have a huge impact in keeping us protected. Unfortunately, there are a few individuals who may have serious medical conditions or allergies that restrict them from getting life-saving vaccinations. So while some may grumble about having to get the flu shot every year, it’s important not only for your health but for the health of those around you. That being said, as we are currently trying to get out of the destruction of COVID-19, we implore you to get vaccinated if you can. Luckily, Total Urgent Care provides vaccinations that can increase your protection. Discover more about how you can get vaccinated and check in with us today.
COVID-19 and Flu Vaccines With Our Urgent Care in Concordia Parish
Some people wonder why we have to get flu vaccines every year. The thing is, flu viruses adapt rapidly. So to keep up, researchers develop vaccines every year to better protect you. And, another reason to get your flu vaccine is because your antibody levels decline over time. Without these antibodies, you’ll have no immuno-protection from the flu—leaving you vulnerable.
Gaining antibodies is the main reason why we need vaccines. Without them, our bodies aren’t prepared to deal with many of the infectious diseases we may encounter. This is also why many healthcare organizations are pushing COVID-19 vaccines so hard. This disease is aggressive, it’s deadly, and it has multiple strains. And COVID-19 vaccination is an effective way to fight back against this disease and to get back to the normal lives we had before.
