If you’ve been sampling all the delicious food that everyone has made over the holidays and not been as active as usual, you may be worried about getting back into a regular and healthy routine. Total Urgent Care has some handy tips to help you out and get you back to ship-shape for those new year’s resolutions!

1. Get plenty of sleep.

Being with family and friends means non-stop activity, and it’s a lot of fun, but it’s easy to push yourself too far when you’re not being mindful. When your body doesn’t get enough rest, it’s harder for your body to fight off colds and sniffles and makes you not as aware. Getting good rest will not only help you be energized for other fun activities but will help you get back into the normal swing of things when it’s time to head back home or to the office.

2. Make simple, smart dietary choices.

“My diet starts tomorrow,” is most everyone’s famous words when it comes to new year’s resolutions. The truth is your diet and nutrition can start with small yet impactful changes. Start with simple swap outs, such as going from sugary snacks to healthier alternatives like nuts, seeds, or fresh fruit. Consider incorporating more whole foods into your meals, such as colorful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Portion control is another key aspect—being mindful of serving sizes can help prevent overeating. Additionally, have some fun with different cooking methods like grilling, baking, or steaming.

3. Focus on getting regular exercise.

We know that during the holidays everyone is busy and active, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting good exercise. Taking a little time every day to do something more exercise oriented- such as taking a walk, lifting weights, or going on a bike ride- can help your body stay healthy and adjusted once the holidays are finished.

4. Make sure you’re hydrated.

If you’ve been drinking mostly eggnog, apple cider, and other sugary drinks during this time, it’s time to drink some water. Nothing is better for your hydration than water, and by making sure you drink several glasses of it a day, you will help you feel more energized so you can stay energized for the new year.
